From Control to Co-Creation: From having part of a person to making room for their full potential

Before one of my team members got married, I asked her brother to share one message with her. They have always been very close, and she has been a great influence in his life.
The message was something like:
“Have more peace rather than worry about me. Let me be me. Let me grow into myself, take responsibility for my life, fall and stand up again, and live my own life. Then you can have the whole of me—not only the part of me that follows you.”
That stayed with me. Because this can happen between siblings. It can happen between parents and children, leaders and teams, partners, and people who simply care deeply about one another.
Sometimes we care so much that we begin to control. We want the person to be safe. We want the result to be good. We want less risk, less mess, less uncertainty. That instinct is not wrong. It may come from love, responsibility, experience, or the desire to protect something that matters.
And still, when control becomes too strong, we may begin to receive only part of the person we care about.
The safer part.
The more predictable part.
The part that knows how to fit.
But not always their full thinking, energy, difference, creativity or potential.
In 1000 Souls in Me, I see another layer here. Sometimes we unconsciously ask another person to live inside our HOME—our way of seeing, our expectations, our definition of what is safe or right—rather than creating the conditions for them to build and inhabit their own HOME within themselves.
And beneath that may sit an even deeper question:
How fully are we living from HOME within ourselves?
When we are not at HOME within ourselves, we may feel the need to control more.
We manage the room.
We manage the people.
We manage the message.
We manage the stage.
From HOME, another way becomes available.
We can still hold the frame. We can still protect standards. We can still guide, challenge, disagree or say no. And we do not need to control every movement inside that frame.
The question begins to shift from:
How do I get the version of you that is easiest for me to manage?
to:
What conditions would allow more of your whole potential to come alive?
I can feel this in teams, family, partnerships—and in myself. There are moments when we want to tighten the space, make things clearer, safer, more predictable, more correct.
And life sometimes reminds us that clarity does not always require more control. Sometimes it asks for more trust, clearer boundaries, clearer ownership—and enough room for another person to bring more of themselves. Then we are no longer only receiving compliance. We begin to meet potential.
Our question for this week:
Am I trying to control this person, this room, this stage—or am I creating conditions where more truth, trust and potential can emerge?
We may still guide.
We may still protect.
We may still hold the frame.
And we can notice:
Does this moment need more control—or more space?
Sometimes, when we stop trying to hold only the manageable part of another person, we begin to meet more of their wholeness. And when we move from controlling the stage to co-creating the stage, more of everyone’s potential has room to enter.
