One evening, I asked a business owner in our program:
“If we want to develop entrepreneurs more holistically, what is one solution?”
He was exhausted. He said, “I Don’t know now. And I’ll give you the answer tomorrow.”
I smiled and said, “You just answered the question”.
“I don’t know, and I will figure it out” – this honesty was a great beginning to knowing later.
We talk about why entrepreneurs fail, investors do not invest, teams leave. We can ask: Which version of us is leading at that moment? And which one to evolve next?
The tired one. The strong one. The calm one. The aggressive one. The loving one. The one who knows. The one who doesn’t.
Years ago, I had a similar conversation with an excellent researcher trying to bring his innovation to market. I asked: “Who do you need to become to bring this into the world?”
He said: “I don’t know.”
We stopped there.
After Lunar New Year, he returned: “Jen, I’ve decided to become an entrepreneurial innovator.”
Then he acted. He met commercial partners. He stepped beyond research into a world he was still learning.

Both of them were honest: “I don’t know now”, and one silently thought I will figure it out and one claimed it. Both did the ‘figuring out after’
…
Sometimes our next evolution begins with an honest: “I don’t know.”
Then comes a decision: “I’ll figure it out,” as long as the goal is important enough. Then an action.
We carry many versions of ourselves. We do not need one of them to lead everything.
The question is:
Who is here now?
Who does this moment need?
Who do I choose to become for what matters?
Honesty shows us where we are.
A decision puts us on the road.
