The Leadership Growth Gap
Alek and Jen had a deep conversation about the challenges of scaling a company from 20 to 200 people.
🔹 Jen: "What is your main challenge as you scale up?"
🔹 Alek: "We’ve grown from 20 to 200 people in just two years. Some team members are highly productive, while others aren’t."
🔹 Jen: "Who led the 20 people? And who is leading the 200 now?"
🔹 Alek: "Still myself and my two co-founders."
🔹 Jen: "Your company scaled 10X in size—but how much did you and your co-founders grow as leaders?"
🔹 Alek: "Wow… not nearly as much. It all happened too fast. We’ve never led a company at this scale before."
💡 At that moment, Alek realized his company had outgrown him.

🔹 Alek: "I’ve had to grow myself. We hired coaches and experts—it helped us see what we couldn’t before."
🔹 Jen: "What else can you do?"
🔹 Alek: "I’ve been networking with leaders of bigger companies to learn from them."
🔹 Jen: "What else?"
🔹 Alek: "Our mid-managers are struggling. Some are productive, but others aren’t aligned."
🔹 Jen: "Do they have experience leading at this scale?"
🔹 Alek: "No… actually, they’re facing the same challenges as me and my co-founders."
🔹 Jen: "You have a system to develop yourself as a leader—what’s your system to develop your mid-managers?"
🔹 Alek: "We don’t have one yet… but we need to."
