Our FOUNDER's story:
The myth of the fear of public speaking...
And there I was, in front of a group of strangers, as part of the audience. I felt the fire of the speakers on the stage, I just wanted to jump there and speak. The desire arose but then was extinguished by a little voice that I didn’t know what it was. All I knew was the little voice held me back and told me ‘hey, you cannot do it’. The little voice often popped up in my mind whenever I wanted to speak up. I felt miserable fighting my desire to share my message and the little voice.
One day, I could not stand the little voice anymore, I just stood up and spoke in front of a group of strangers. Interestingly, once I spoke the first word, the little voice disappeared. Oh, I realised the voice was just an illusion (yes, I heard people said it a lot of times but I only appreciated it when I took action). I got even more excited and the more I spoke, the more I felt in love with speaking. I was excited to imagine myself being a great speaker soon. The excitement didn’t last long. After 3 months of continuous giving different speeches, my mentor told me that people didn’t really get what I said in general because I often spoke fast from my head instead of talking to the audience’s head and that didn’t make the audience feel connected. Once again, I heard the little voice again ‘hey, you cannot do it’.
Thankfully, my mentor could read me like an open book. He saw my expression and gently said ‘You are a great speaker, just bring that identity out there through daily practice. Remember your voice can change lives. Remember the purpose on the first place that made you want to speak and try your best to develop it everyday’. His words re-connected me with my purpose and my empowering belief in my public speaking identity and vanished the little voice. I would practice every day one topic and record myself. I would watch one video per day and learn the tips from the speaker in the video then apply them into my speech. I would go to all public speaking clubs in my area to speak. I would give a speech every time I had the chance, even with someone on the road. I would get feedback from my mentor and adjust my speaking patterns to improve.
With the continuous action and adjustment based on supportive feedback, I have improved my speaking skills, mindset and identity and most importantly I feel like I have just started my journey of developing myself as a better speaker and a better person everyday. I sometimes may still hear the little voice but I then just smile and do it anyway. Speaking becomes a meal for me everyday. I am thankful to have ‘eaten’ in different cities of more than 10 countries in the world especially creating my own personal development seminars in the UK, Spain, Malaysia and Vietnam and sharing stage with international trainers and entrepreneurs. I have also the privilege to be the winner of different public speaking contests in Malaysia and Vietnam and the US Embassy. This has also given me chances to train and speak with different audiences of HViet program, EIY Public Speaking Center, Collaborative leadership conference in Bradford University in the UK, Enterprise conference in Hue University in Vietnam, AIESEC, US Embassy Roadshow and US Embassy leadership and innovation program. Recently, I was also thrilled to be able to give a speech at one of the Tedx events.
Working with people from all walks of life ranging from children to adults, I could see a similar pattern when they approach public speaking – having a little voice that tells them ‘hey, you cannot do it’. Some of them then let the little voice, the fear, stop them from speaking up or becoming great speakers. Some of them let the little voice, the fear motivate them to speak up and then become great speakers . I can see that the patterns in the development journey of these great speakers are similar to the patterns in my speaking development journey. Hence, I would love to share with you these patterns – the map to help you in your development journey to master public speaking. Just remember, you already have the seed of a great speaker inside you, you just need to have the right mindset, strategies from people who have been in the same journey and daily consistent action to develop the identity stronger day by day. I am here to help you develop your identity as a great speaker so you can speak to change things. It is the reason me and my team have designed different speaking courses for you. This article is introducing our foundation course: 5-module confident public speaker course.
With love,
looking forward to speak with you soon,
Jen,
“When we focus on serving, fear becomes excitement. ”
